RESEARCH SUMMARY

Catherine Thomas conducts empirical work in organizational economics, examining the determinants and consequences of firm structure and focusing on multinational production. Recognizing that information about market conditions and market participants’ actions is often incomplete, Catherine studies three related questions: 1) How do firms span international borders (offshoring)? (2) What do firms do in-house and what do they do at arm’s length (outsourcing)? (3) What are the consequences of firms’ organizational and ownership structures for innovation and for firm performance? Her research analyzes heterogeneous firms’ activities in different industry settings to further our understanding about how well firms govern economic activity, in comparison to market exchange.
