Programs : Country Dialogues
Ethiopia
  Overview
Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, civil war, drought, and a fall in export prices stunted Ethiopian economic growth. It is estimated that the country will have to maintain a 5.7% rate of growth in order to reduce poverty by half of its current level by 2015; an important United Nations Millennium Goal. IPD, which has had a long relationship with Ethiopia dating back to Joe Stiglitz's and Akbar Noman's work in the country with the World Bank, has held two Country Dialogues to identify and discuss economic policies that will help the country attain its development goals.

The question is at last being raised: Perhaps the entire strategy is flawed? Perhaps what is needed is a fundamental rethinking.
Ethiopia Country Dialogue 2004
Event: Aug 28, 2004 - Aug 30, 2004
Following its 2001 event, IPD held a public forum in August 2004. The IPD team met with Prime Minister Meles Zenawi and other senior policy makers, and convened a public dialogue attended by a diverse audience of some 400-500 civil society representatives and government officials. Private industry and government used the event to explore new avenues of cooperation, while IPD brought fresh perspectives to debates on privatization, property rights, and rural development policy. The Dialogue served to open lines of communication among the varied groups in attendance, and broadened the debate on the appropriate strategic role of the state; industrial policy; export promotion’s role in facilitating an efficient, competitive industrial sector; the role of the financial sector in aiding development; and agricultural price policy.
