Programs : Country Dialogues
Colombia
  Overview
Colombia's recent economic policies have led to economic stability, but not economic growth. Like many countries in the region, Colombia is now struggling with the question of what policies it can enact to stimulate real growth. This South American country also faces the issue of violence. Is it the violence that has hindered economic growth, or has the lack of growth contributed to the rise of violence? IPD was invited to Colombia to explore these and other issues in an open dialogue, and to examine alternative strategies for long-term growth and development.

Colombia Country Dialogue 2003
Event: Towards a More Sustainable Economy : Armed Conflict and Post Conflict Process in Colombia: Mar 05, 2003 - Mar 07, 2003
IPD traveled to Colombia in March 2003 for an eventful and highly effective visit. The group met with Colombia's President Alvaro Uribe Velez, his economic advisors, the country's former Presidents, and members of Congress. IPD also held a conference in coordination with Fundacion Agenda Colombia. More than 700 people including Colombia's most influential politicians and policymakers attended the conference. It was broadcast live throughout the country to many Colombian universities, and featured an interactive question and answer session via the Internet. The publicly aired conference generated continued public policy debate for roughly six months after the Dialogue concluded.

As a direct result of the dialogue's success, IPD and Fundacion Agenda Colombia are publishing a book outlining the debate on economic policy and political economy issues such as the relationship between violence and the economy, the asymmetries faced by Colombia in the world market and the advantages and disadvantages of open markets and trade liberalization.

Country Dialogue Reports: Colombia books
Publication: Follow up to IPD Country Dialogue
In conjunction with Agenda Fundacion Colombia, IPD is publishing a book on the current economic questions affecting Colombia. The chapters, authored by different economists will outline the current debate on economic policy and political economy issues such as the relationship between violence and the economy, the asymmetries faced by Colombia in the world market and the advantages and disadvantages of open markets and trade liberalization. This collaboration was a direct result of the successful IPD Country Dialogue held in the spring of 2003.
