Rates of participation in pension systems are low in many developing countries due to the large informal sectors and the difficulty of enforcement. In many African and Latin American countries coverage of the economically active population is under 50%.
The Pensions and Social Insurance task force seeks to promote understanding of the policy options faced by developing countries in managing and reforming their pensions and social insurance systems. The task force focuses on some of the most fundamental issues concerning adequate provision of retirement income including: coverage and collection, public sector pensions, investment, governance, and annuities and retirement income design. The standard approach of international organizations of looking at public sector pensions in isolation is inadequate, and that focus on the total compensation package of the public sector is necessary.
