Country Dialogue Programs
  Overview
IPD Country Dialogues promote an active debate on crucial economic issues. In cooperation with in-country partners, IPD convenes forums that bring together diverse stakeholders, including senior government officials, opposition parties, members of Parliament, NGO's, labor, academics, business communities, and the media - often for the first time. These forums encourage discussion and analysis of all available economic policy options and help developing countries governments and their citizens explore policy alternatives in an open and inclusive manner.
  What's New
Argentina Country Dialogue 2005
Event: Aug 23, 2005 - Aug 23, 2005
The Initiative for Policy Dialogue, in partnership with the Universidad de Buenos Aires, is organizing a forum entitled, The Buenos Aires Consensus; A New Agenda for Latin America fifteen years after the Washington Consensus. Through a series of meetings and a public dialogue, an IPD team headed by Joseph Stiglitz and Jose Antonio Ocampo will leverage lessons learned from Argentina's recent experiences to explore alternative approaches to industrial policy, debt management, macroeconomic policy, and trade.
China Policy Dialogue 2005
Event: Jun 01, 2005 - Jun 01, 2005
Drawing from its deep network of task force experts, IPD convened two panels on the topics of governance and transparency in Beijing.

Patrick Bolton, chair of the IPD Corporate Governance task force and Chong-En Bai, also a task force member, addressed the corporate governance problems that China has in common with other transition countries. They provided a snapshot of the state of governance in publicly listed companies, and the impacts of privatization.

Ann Florini, chair of the IPD task force on Transparency, and Hanhua Zhou chaired the second panel. Their presentations gave an overview of global trends in transparency, and highlighted recent developments in the Chinese local and national government.
Indonesia Dialogue 2004
Event: Dec 10, 2004 - Dec 14, 2004
In December 2004, IPD held a Dialogue in Indonesia in conjunction with a Central Bank meeting, and helped formulate a new strategy for managing monetary policy. IPD met with H.E. President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, the Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, and the State Minister of Development, among others. The team helped identify current debates and provide alternative ideas on how to combat corruption, increase bank lending in order to stimulate investment, create an infrastructure fund, and manage exchange rate and prudential regulation.
Ethiopia Country Dialogue 2004
Event: Aug 28, 2004 - Aug 30, 2004
Following its 2001 event, IPD held a public forum in August 2004. The IPD team met with Prime Minister Meles Zenawi and other senior policy makers, and convened a public dialogue attended by a diverse audience of some 400-500 civil society representatives and government officials. Private industry and government used the event to explore new avenues of cooperation, while IPD brought fresh perspectives to debates on privatization, property rights, and rural development policy. The Dialogue served to open lines of communication among the varied groups in attendance, and broadened the debate on the appropriate strategic role of the state; industrial policy; export promotion’s role in facilitating an efficient, competitive industrial sector; the role of the financial sector in aiding development; and agricultural price policy.
