Dear Class of 2012,

Welcome to Columbia Business School!  Orientation is right around the corner and it is going to be a blast.  Columbia’s Peer Advisors will be available during the summer, the week of Orientation and afterwards to help ease the transition into B-school life.  So if you have any questions about laptops, classes, finding an apartment, etc. feel free to reach out to us.  We are here to help you.

Matan Ariel

Matan Ariel was born in New York City and moved to Israel as an infant. During his teen years, Matan majored in Theater Arts in the Thelma-Yellin High School of the Arts, participated in community theater projects and performed with the Israeli Opera.

Upon graduating from high school, Matan joined the Israeli military and served three years as an entertainer in the Israeli Navy Entertainment Unit. Following his honorary discharge in the rank of First Class Sergeant, Matan collaborated with his military colleagues and produced a series of seventeen CDs and five children videos under the label "Matan Ariel & Friends."

Matan then moved back to New York where he studies Political Science at Columbia University. Following his graduation Matan accepted a position with Google's media sales team. After three fantastic years at Google Matan returned to Columbia for his MBA, where he is also the President of I-PREP, a volunteering program that helps prepare individuals on welfare for upcoming job interviews. 

Katherine Sorensen

Katherine was born in Manhattan and spent most of her childhood in northern New Jersey.   She attended Harvard University where she initially planned to pursue the natural sciences and ultimately medicine before discovering her love of economics.   Her first fulltime position out of college was as an investment banking analyst at Morgan Stanley.  She then worked as a consultant at Mercer Management Consulting (now Oliver Wyman) before transitioning into executive search at Glocap, where she spent three and a half years as a private equity recruiter before coming to Columbia Business School.

Katherine is now in her second year at CBS.  Along with Peer Advising, she is active with the Bernstein board, the Wine Society, and Follies.  She plans to stay in the human capital field after graduation.

In her free time, Katherine enjoys pilates, the beach (whether the Hamptons or the Jersey shore), dining out, and cheering on the Boston Red Sox and Boston Celtics.

Corey Robins

Corey is a born and bred Californian.  He was born and raised in Los Angeles, and then moved to the Bay Area (San Francisco) to complete his undergraduate degree at the Haas School of Business at UC Berkeley.  During his time at UC Berkeley, Corey was part of the Acacia Fraternity and played tenor saxophone in the University of California Marching Band.  After graduating Corey stayed in San Francisco and joined Deloitte Consulting in the Strategy & Operations group.  He worked across multiple industries including High Tech, Health Care, & Retail.

After Deloitte, Corey knew that if he was ever going to leave California it was to head to New York City.  As such, Columbia Business School was his top choice!  In Corey’s first year at CBS he participated in cluster activities as the Cluster H 2011 Academic Rep, he was elected the AVP of Alumni Relations for the West Coast Society, and he served as a member of the Hermes Society.  Additionally Corey worked with a small local apartment furnishings manufacturer through the Small Business Consulting Program.  In the 2010-2011 academic year Corey will continue to be active on campus.  Aside from being a Peer Advisor, Corey will work with the CMC as a Career Fellow, and has been elected the Cluster Q VP of Careers.

Outside of school Corey loves to go running in the city, discovering new bands, and trying new restaurants (please send recommendations!).  In the summer of 2010 Corey will be working in Brand Management at Unilever, focusing on the new Dove Men + Care brand.

Duygu Baydur

Duygu Baydur was born and raised in Istanbul, Turkey.  She attended the German High School of Istanbul.  During her high school years, she was an exchange student for one year in Cleveland, OH.  She played Varsity Basketball, ran Cross Country and Track.  She was also the captain of the Women's Chess Team at her high school. 

In 2001, she moved to Philadelphia, PA to start her undergraduate degree at University of Pennsylvania.  She majored in Economics and minored in Mathematics and German Literature.  After her graduation from University of Pennsylvania, Duygu moved to New York City and started working at Citi Private Bank.  She joined the US Investment Solutions Group and worked at Citi for four years before joining the CBS community.

Duygu enjoys running and biking in the city.  She also likes going out with friends and trying out different restaurants.  During the summer of 2010, she will be doing Sales and Trading at Citi.

Mikki Columbus

From 2005 to 2009 Mikki Columbus worked at HSBC in Islamic real estate for the asset management division. Her responsibilities, ranging from analysis to marketing to product development helped solidify her interest in real estate.  Studying ancient Greece as a classics major helped fuel her interest in architecture.  As to the future, as a real estate developer Mikki aspires to help develop an Olympic village (or at least the neighborhood pool).

Mikki is a suburban New Yorker who ventured only as far as Middletown CT to attend Wesleyan University. She has diverse interests including painting, cooking, reading, poker, and athletics. In college, Mikki was a member of, not one, but four varsity teams. She remain active through masters swimming and corporate softball and cherish the life long friendships these have fostered.

At school this past year many would say it's an understatement that Mikki was involved.  A member of Follies, Rugby, the Real Estate Association, Eureka to name a few, Mikki had an amazing time first year (yeah, there was some studying in there as well).  Mikki is looking forward to being a part of orientation and meeting all of the incoming first years!

Laura Hart

Laura Hart graduated from the University of Maryland with a double major in Marketing and Logistics. Laura spent three years as Assistant Buyer for Park Avenue retailer Scully & Scully where she developed and refined a premium product assortment for the growing business. Most recently, Laura worked as Associate Buyer for Japanese retailer Takashimaya New York.  At Takashimaya, she managed her department's re-branding initiative and collaborated with the nonprofit organization Aid to Artisans to incorporate a line of sustainable home accessories from Mozambique. Laura will spend her summer developing and implementing sustainability strategy at Maidenform Brands. She is pursuing a focus in Marketing and Corporate Social Responsibility at Columbia Business School.
