Mr. Imran Ahmed is a Managing Director in the Commercial Real Estate group at Deutsche Bank. He is involved with exploring innovative, strategic initiatives and alternative sources of capital. Mr. Ahmed has been associated with various aspects of the real estate industry for 16 years and with Deutsche Bank and its predecessors since 1998. At Deutsche Bank, he has been a senior banker in both the Real Estate Investment Banking and Commercial Real Estate Groups in New York and London. He has extensive experience in M&A, Equity and Debt Capital Markets, Structured Finance and Corporate Advisory. Mr. Ahmed was responsible for the Commercial Real Estate group’s entry into the Middle East and South Asia, which led its establishment in Mumbai, India commencing January 2007. Professor Beim had a 25-year career in investment banking, following which he became a professor in the Finance and Economics Division of Columbia Business School. He joined has been a full-time professor of professional practice since 1991. His areas of teaching include corporate finance, international banking and emerging financial markets. Beim’s Wall Street career included 10 years at First Boston Corporation. He has also served as executive vice president of the Export-Import Bank of the United States. He graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor’s in political science from Stanford, and he continued his education as a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford, earning a master’s in politics.

Currently, Vinodh serves as General Manager of Saavn (formerly BODVOD Networks), a joint venture of 212MEDIA and Hungama Mobile that packages, distributes and promotes an exclusive catalog of Bollywood content for cable, Internet and mobile carrier on-demand services. Vinodh oversees Saavn’s cable operator-branded Bollywood movies-on-demand and Saavn-branded subscription VOD offerings currently available in over 15 million Time Warner, Cox, Rogers, and other digital cable households. In addition, Saavn’s music content is available on over 17 different Internet services such as iTunes, eMusic, Rhapsody, and Amazon Unbox and mobile carriers including Verizon Wireless, AT&T, T-Mobile and Boost. Vinodh’s responsibilities include overseeing content acquisition, marketing, distribution, integrated sponsorships, and recruiting. Saavn has been covered in The Wall Street Journal, Los Angeles Times, San Jose Mercury News, CNN, and India Abroad.

 

Vinodh began his career at Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette (DLJ), where his experiences centered on advising and financing media & telecom companies such as Voyager, Earthlink, and AT&T. After DLJ, he co-founded and served as Director, Sales & Business Development of Simile, a new media software and services company that advised the business units of Time Warner, McClatchy, Scripps, and Hearst.

Serge Buchakjian

Serge D. Buchakjian has been with Honeywell (previously AlliedSignal) since 1995. He assumed his current position as Vice President - International, Defense & Space in May 1999. He has broad responsibility for all of Honeywell Aerospace Defense & Space activities outside the U.S. and is based in New Jersey.

 

Prior to his current role, Serge served as vice president, military market for Europe, Middle East, and Africa and was based in London (Hounslow). He was responsible for field sales, marketing, business development, and aftermarket activity for the military market in his region. He was also a member of the board of directors of Normalair Garrett Limited (NGL), a wholly-owned subsidiary and Managing Director of AlliedSignal Aerospace-Hounslow. Buchakjian also maintained his position as vice president of international business development of AlliedSignal Electronic and Avionic Systems based in Teterboro, N.J.

 

Before joining Honeywell, Buchakjian spent 14 years with Smiths Industries/Lear Siegler Inc. in various executive international positions in the Aerospace, Commercial, and Industrial fields.

 

Buchakjian holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from Haigazian College and a master’s degree in business administration from Northeastern University. In addition, he attended executive management courses at Oxford University, the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University and the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University. He is multilingual and active in numerous international trade, professional, and civic organizations.

Aseem Chhabra is a freelance writer in New York City who writes on a variety of topics, but focuses on entertainment and arts stories. He serves on the board of SAJA (South Asian Journalists Association).

 

Aseem has been published in The New York Times, The Boston Globe, The Philadelphia Inquirer, Time Out New York and The Courier Journal. He contributes to several Indian-American publications, including India Abroad, and its sister website, Rediff.com, and he writes a weekly New York column for Mumbai Mirror. His byline has appeared in India in The Telegraph, The Hindustan Times, The Times of India, India Today and the Indian edition of Cosmopolitan.

Ms. Neelam Deo is a career diplomat of the Indian Foreign Service with over three decades in the Indian Diplomatic Corps. She took over as the Consul General in the Consulate General of India, New York in October, 2005. Previously, she was been India's Ambassador to Denmark and Ivory Coast, with concurrent accreditation to Sierra Leone, Niger & Guinea. Prior to her assignment in New York, she was Head of the Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Myanmar Division in the Ministry of External Affairs, New Delhi, dealing with India's overall relations with these countries. Professor Camille Douglas

From 1996 to the present, Ms. Douglas has served as a Principal of Mainstreet Capital Partners. Mainstreet Capital Partners provides strategic and transactional financial advice to real estate companies, companies with significant real estate assets and public development corporations. Ms. Douglas was financial advisor to the Canary Wharf Group plc, in London, England from November 2002-November 2003 and acted as financial advisor to Paul Reichmann on the privatization of Canary Wharf as well as other matters from 2003-06.

 

Ms. Douglas is an Adjunct Professor at Columbia Business School, co-teaching the Master Class in real estate, specializing in the globalization of real estate development and investment.

 

Ms Douglas has had extensive prior experience in originating and structuring transactions in both the private and public real estate markets. From 1982-94, Ms. Douglas was a senior finance executive at Olympia & York. As such, she was responsible for the company’s financial strategy and debt and equity financing totaling over $1 billion per year. She was also involved in the development and financing of World Financial Center in New York and Canary Wharf in London. Prior to her time at Olympia & York, Ms. Douglas served as Vice President for Morgan Stanley.

 

Ms. Douglas received her Master of Urban Planning degree from the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University in 1977. During her studies at Harvard University, she served as a Teaching Assistant to Harvard Business School Professor William Poorvu and studied at both the Harvard Business School and Harvard Law School. Ms. Douglas received a BA from Smith College in 1973.

 

Ms. Douglas serves on the Executive Committee of the Board of the King Hussein Foundation and in the Advisory Board of FINCA (the largest global microfinance lender).

Sheila Hooda

Prior to joining TIAA-CREF, Sheila was a Managing Director at Credit Suisse in the Investment Banking Division. Prior to Credit Suisse, Sheila’s work experiences included leadership positions at Bankers Trust and management consulting with McKinsey and Co. In addition to the United States, Sheila has worked and had assignments in Europe and Asia Pacific, in her over twenty years of experience in financial services.

 

Sheila received an M.B.A with a specialization in Finance from the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business, a Masters in Management from the Indian Institute of Management – Ahmedabad, India and a Bachelor of Science with a major in Mathematics from Fergusson College, University of Poona, India.

 

Sheila is a member of the Business Council of the Asia Society and the Global Advisory Board of the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business. She is also on the Boards on various non profits focused on the empowerment of women in the area of Micro finance and the education of under privileged children in India including the SKS Microfinance Foundation (The Ultra Poor Program), Pratham, Prerana and Asian Women in Business (AWIB).

Sudeep Jain

An IAS officer of 1994 batch, Sudeep has held numerous challenging assignments with the Government of Tamil Nadu including Sub Collector/Collector of multiple districts, City Commissioner, and Managing director of Electronics Corporation of Tamil Nadu (ELCOT). He is currently Joint Secretary to Government in Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Department. From restoration of an old fort in Tranquebar to working at improving aspirational levels of school students in Dharmapuri, winning a Government of India award for pioneering work in e-Administration to planning knowledge corridors in TN, there are numerous feathers in Sudeep's crowded hat.

 

In December 2002 as collector of Nagapattinam, Sudeep’s plantation exercise in Naluvedapathy not only broke a Guinness World Record (for planting 80,244 trees in 24 hours), it also saved a lot of lives when the Tsunami hit the village on December 26, 2004. While 6,065 people died in this district, only one was from Naluvedapathy. The casuarina trees that were planted by Sudeep's team took the brunt of the tsunami waves. In Jan 2005, Sudeep co-founded BITSunami - a Tsunami Rehabilitation Trust – which adopted 2 villages. Bitsunami then went on to surpass the previous Guinness Record planting 254,464 trees this time in 24 hours.

 

Sudeep is an Electrical and Electronics Engineer from BITS Pilani, an MBA from Jodhpur University and a Hubert H Humphrey Fellow from University of Washington.

Award-winning author Mira Kamdar's latest book is Planet India: The Turbulent Rise of the Largest Democracy and the Future of Our World (Scribner 2008). The French edition, published by Actes Sud in January 2008, was translated by Andre Lewin, former French ambassador to India and translator of Pavan Varma's Being Indian. Kamdar's critically acclaimed memoir, Motiba's Tattoos: A Granddaughter's Journey from America into her Indian Family's Past was a 2000 Barnes & Noble Discover Great New Writers Selection and won the 2002 Washington Book Award.

Punita Kumar-Sinha is the Senior Portfolio Manager and Chief Investment Officer for Blackstone Asia Advisors L.L.C. which includes The India Fund, Inc., The Asia Tigers Fund, Inc. and The Asia Opportunities Fund L.P., and is a Senior Managing Director of The Blackstone Group L.P. Ms. Kumar-Sinha has managed The India Fund since July 31, 1997, The Asia Tigers Fund since June 30, 1999 and The Asia Opportunities Fund since its inception on December 1, 2006.

 

Ms. Kumar-Sinha has over nineteen years experience in fund management in international and emerging markets. Prior to joining Blackstone, Ms. Kumar-Sinha was a Managing Director and Senior Portfolio Manager at Oppenheimer Asset Management Inc., and CIBC World Markets, where she was also the Portfolio Manager for The India Fund and The Asia Tigers Fund. Prior to that she was the Portfolio Manager on the emerging markets team at Batterymarch, which she joined after four years at Standish Ayer & Wood. At Standish Ayer she developed country allocation models and strategies as part of the international equity management team as well as researched investments in Southeast Asia and other international markets. While at graduate school, Ms. Kumar-Sinha interned at J.P. Morgan Investment Management and at the IFC's emerging markets index group. She also spent a year with the Latin American Department of the World Bank.

 

She has been frequently featured in the media, including, The Financial Times, The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Barron’s, Forbes, CNN, CNBC, Fox News, Star News, and The Economic Times. Many of her contributions at seminars and conferences have projected the potential and prospects of India as an investment destination.

 

Ms. Kumar-Sinha has a Ph.D. and a Masters in Finance from the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania. She received her undergraduate degree in chemical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, New Delhi. She has an MBA and is also a CFA Charter holder. Claudio Lilienfeld

Mr. Lilienfeld is the Acting Assistant U.S Trade Representative for South Asia in the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative. He oversees the development of U.S. trade policy and negotiation strategies for the South Asia region (which includes Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka) and Iraq.

 

Prior to this position, Mr. Lilienfeld served as Director, South Asian Affairs, in the Office of the Secretary of Defense. During this period (1999-2006), his responsibilities included managing the development and implementation of the Administration’s significant new initiatives and with India and Pakistan, as well as policy oversight for operations in Afghanistan.

 

From 2003-2004, Mr. Lilienfeld was on a one-year Defense Department fellowship as a visiting scholar at Johns Hopkins University’s School for Advanced International Studies, where he focused on examining U.S. strategy in South Asia. Prior to his South Asia work, Mr. Lilienfeld oversaw the Department of Defense’s humanitarian relief operations worldwide (1993-1999), and also served in other positions in the Office of the Secretary of Defense (1989-1993).

 

Mr. Lilienfeld received a Bachelors degree in Geophysics in 1984 and a Master’s degree in International Relations in 1987, both from the University of Chicago.

 

Mr. Lilienfeld grew up in Lexington, Massachusetts. He and his 12 year old son Aidan live in Washington, DC.

Professor Low is an experienced entrepreneur and a leading authority on entrepreneurship in independent, corporate and not-for-profit settings. Starting businesses in several industries led him to study how the entrepreneurial process differs by context. His current research examines the dynamics of entrepreneurial careers. As the founder of the Columbia Entrepreneurship Program, he has worked to make entrepreneurship a viable career option for MBA graduates. Mr. Sandeep Mathrani, Executive Vice President of Vornado Realty Trust, is responsible for Vornado’s retail real estate activities, including International operations, leasing, development, operations and management.

Ramanan Raghavendran

Ramanan Raghavendran founded Kubera Partners in December 2006 together with Kumar Mahadeva. Kubera Partners is a private equity firm that invests in cross-border companies, primarily in the US-India corridor, from offices in New York and Mumbai. The firm is differentiated by the successful investment and operating track record of its principals. Kubera invests between $20 million and $40 million per investment but can make significantly larger investments where appropriate.

 

Prior to founding Kubera, Ramanan was responsible for leading the successful cross-border investing efforts at TH Lee Putnam Ventures (THLPV) as a Senior Partner and continues to oversee the THLPV portfolio today. Ramanan was formerly a Senior Partner at Insight Venture Partners where he invested in business process outsourcing and enterprise software companies. Prior to joining Insight, he was a senior member of the investment team at General Atlantic where he initiated the Internet-related investment effort and also led sector efforts in technology services and enterprise software. Ramanan began his career at McKinsey & Company.

 

Ramanan also co-founded Impact Partners, the first venture philanthropy firm in India, and is a member of the executive committee of the Center for the Advanced Study of India at the University of Pennsylvania.

Robert Rahbari

Pandia Rajan is the founding member of the Confederation of Indian Organisations for Service and Advocacy (CIOSA), a forum representing over 180 NGOs in Chennai and is also an active Rotarian.

Professor Bhaven Sampat

Professor Bhaven Sampat is an assistant professor at Columbia, with appointments in the Departments of Health Policy and Management, Surgery, and SIPA. Dr. Sampat is an economist by training, interested in issues where health policy and innovation policy intersect. His work examines factors affecting allocation of funds for biomedical research, economic and health impacts of medical innovation, and effects of patents on access to essential medicines in developing countries. He leads the Columbia-Stanford Consortium on medical innovation, and is principal investigator on a Ford Foundation initiative examining patent reform in developing countries. Sampat received his B.A., M.A., M.Phil., and Ph.D. degrees from Columbia.

Sanjay has an MBA from Columbia Business School and was an investment banker with Lazard Freres & Co. and Dresdner Kleinwort Wasserstein. He currently works with Ramius Capital Group, an $8 billion hedge fund, and is also the President of Relentless Pictures, Inc. a motion picture production company.

 

Sanjay is the author of “Merger”, a 380-page suspense novel published by Forge Books (St. Martin’s Press) in the U.S. and by Manjul Publishing in India. “Merger” is a high-stakes financial thriller which was favorably reviewed by Chicago Tribune and BARRON’s, and is currently being developed as a motion picture by Relentless Pictures in cooperation with Brillstein Grey Entertainment, producers of “Troy”, “The Departed” and “The Sopranos”.

 

Sanjay is now working on his second novel, an international thriller about art theft and terrorism.

 

He has also completed spec episodes for “Law & Order” and “Without a Trace” and is developing a new TV drama “The Commission”.

 

From 1996-1998, Sanjay produced and anchored his own weekly Radio Show on WKCR 89.9 FM and interviewed public figures such as Christiane Amanpour, Art Buchwald, Larry King and others.

 

Sanjay worked from 1992-1995 with Strategic Intelligence Network, Inc., a spinoff from Kroll Associates. During his time with SINI, he was involved in all facets of corporate investigative work, including liaising with ex-law enforcement officers to conduct due diligence on business transactions.

In India, it is co-chaired by Dr. Arun Shourie, former Minister of Disinvestment, Communications and Information Technology, and Mr. Salman Khurshid, former Minister of External Affairs. The USIBA has led Iowa Governor Tom Vilsack’s and former Virginia Governor Mark Warner’s delegations to India as well as trade delegations from several states including North Carolina, New Mexico, and Alabama. The USIBA, in conjunction with the House International Relations Subcommittee on Asia and the Pacific, launched the Congressional Task Force on US-India Investment and Trade Relations on Capitol Hill. USIBA, in cooperation with the Task Force, parallels the work of the US-India CEO Forum at the legislative level.

 

Mr. Shah is also the Founder Chairman of the Future Leaders Council of the US India Political Action Committee (USINPAC), the largest national bi-partisan advocacy organization representing the over 2 million Indian Americans. The USINPAC works with members of Congress of both parties, as well as the administration, to ensure that the community’s concerns are addressed. For the past four years, Mr. Shah has co-led US Congressional and CEO Delegations for talks with the Prime Minister and top government and business leaders of India.

Premal Shah

As President, Premal leads Kiva's efforts to scale its partnerships and member base. Prior to Kiva, Premal was a Principal Product Manager at PayPal, an eBay company. During his 6 year career at PayPal, Premal drove a number of key initiatives including a year long project defining eBay's role in economically empowering the global working poor. A number of corporate initiatives have come out of this effort, including PayPal's support of Kiva. Prior to PayPal, Premal was a strategy consultant at Mercer Management Consulting in New York. Premal has had a long standing interest in microfinance. In 1997, he was awarded a grant from Stanford University to research microfinance in Gujarat, India. More recently Premal co-founded the Silicon Valley Microfinance Network and spent 2 months in India working to refine / validate Kiva's model. Harjiv Singh

Harjiv Singh, a Gutenberg co-founder, leads the International expansion for Gutenberg Communications. He has led the establishment of offices in London, New Delhi and Bangalore and managed the company’s rapid international growth during the past three years. Harjiv works extensively with clients across a diverse range of industries like technology, real estate, investment management, academic and the non-profit sectors.

 

Before Gutenberg Communications, Harjiv was a consultant at Edelman where he led a new business development initiative to create a cross-functional, India-focused practice. A serial entrepreneur, he co-founded MDoffices.com, a wireless software company in the healthcare industry.

  Ron Somers

Ron Somers is the President of the U.S.-India Business Council, established in 1975, and comprised of more than 215 of the top U.S. companies investing in India, joined by global Indian companies promoting economic reforms with an aim to deepen trade relations and broaden commercial ties between the two countries.

 

He serves as the Council's CEO, leading advocacy initiatives on Capitol Hill as well as in New Delhi. Ron also heads the Manhattan India Investment Roundtable in New York, comprised of the top 20 Fortune 500 financial service institutions, banks and insurance companies investing in India.

 

Ron recently served as Unocal Corporation's chief executive in India, developing commercial opportunities in India’s emerging energy market. Previously, Ron served as Managing Director for India on behalf of Cogentrix Energy, tasked with setting up a 1000 MW electric power project in the Indian state of Karnataka.

 

A seasoned India-hand having spent 11 years resident in India, Ron has served on the Board of Directors of Hindustan Oil Exploration Company (HOEC), India's first private sector oil exploration company, as well as on the Board of the United States Educational Foundation in India, which oversees the country's Fulbright Scholarship endowment.
