Gita Johar (PhD: NYU; MBA: Indian Institute of Management) has been on the faculty of Columbia Business School since 1992 and is currently the Senior Vice Dean and Meyer Feldberg Professor of Business. Professor Johar's expertise lies in consumer psychology, focusing on how consumers react to marketing efforts, especially advertising, promotions and sponsorship. She also examines the influence of consumer self-control and perceptions of control on decision making and consumption. This research has implications for the design of effective communication strategies. She has published several influential articles in the areas of consumer persuasion and decision making in leading marketing journals such as the Journal of Consumer Research, Journal of Consumer Psychology, Journal of Marketing Research, Journal of Advertising, Journal of Experimental Psychology, Psychological Science and Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes. Professor Johar currently serves as the Associate Editor of two major journals in her field, the Journal of Marketing Research and the Journal of Consumer Research and sits on the Editorial Review Board of the Journal of Consumer Psychology. She served as co-chair of the 2010 Association for Consumer Research conference. Professor Johar teaches courses on Advertising and Branding, Global Marketing Consulting for Social Enterprise, Research Methods, and Consumer Behavior to MBA, Executive MBA and PhD students.

Professor Arvind Panagariya

Jagdish Bhagwati Professor of Economics at Columbia University and former Chief Economist at the Asian Development Bank

Arvind Panagariya is an Indian economist and Bhagwati Professor of Economics at Columbia University and an ex-Chief Economist at the Asian Development Bank. In the past, he has been the Chief Economist of the Asian Development Bank and a Professor of Economics and Co-director, Center for International Economics, University of Maryland at College Park. He has also worked for the World Bank, International Monetary Fund, World Trade Organization, and the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) in various capacities. He holds a Ph.D. degree in Economics from Princeton University. Panagariya has written/edited ten books. His latest book, India: The Emerging Giant—was published in March 2008 by the Oxford University Press, New York and has been described as the ‘definitive book on the Indian economy’ by Fareed Zakaria and ‘a tour de horizon and a tour de force’ by Jagdish Bhagwati. His previous books include The Economics of Preferential Trade Agreements, 1996, AEI Press (with Jagdish Bhagwati) and Lectures on International Trade, 1998, MIT Press (with J. Bhagwati and T.N. Srinivasan).

Anoop Singh

Mr. Anoop Singh

Anoop Singh has been Director of the Asia and Pacific Department of the International Monetary Fund since November 2008. Before that, Mr. Singh was Director of the Western Hemisphere Department. Mr. Singh, an Indian national, holds graduate and post graduate degrees from the universities of Bombay, Cambridge, and the London School of Economics. His other appointments at the IMF have included: Director, Special Operations in the Office of the Managing Director; Senior Advisor, Policy Development and Review Department; Assistant Director, European Department; and IMF Resident Representative in Sri Lanka. His additional work experience includes: Special Advisor to the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (I.G. Patel and Manmohan Singh); Senior Economic Advisor to the Vice President, Asia Region, the World Bank; Adjunct Professor at Georgetown University; and sometime lecturer in Bombay University. Mr. Singh has worked and written on macroeconomic, surveillance, and crisis management issues, helping design Fund-supported programs in emerging market, transition, and developing countries in South and South-East Asia, Eastern Europe, and Latin America. He led missions to Thailand, Indonesia, and Malaysia during the Asian crises in 1997-99, to Vietnam, Bulgaria, and Albania during their early transition experiences in the late 1980s-early 1990s, and to a number of other countries in Asia and in the Americas, including the Philippines, India, Australia, China, Japan, and Argentina. During 2002-2008, he directed the work of the Western Hemisphere department.

He is a chartered accountant who qualified with a first rank in Kerala and ranked 20th overall in India, in 1978. He has a bachelor degree in Commerce from Kerala University where he was a rank holder and gold medallist. He was also awarded the Times of India group Business Excellence Award in customised Financial Services in March 2009. He served as the Chairman of the Kerala Non banking FinanceCompanies Welfare Association from 2004 to 2007 and is currently its Vice Chairman. He is also the Member Secretary of Finance Companies Association, Chennai. He is the founder member for The Indus EntrepreneursInternational, Kochi Chapter and is now a member of the Core Committee of The Indus Entrepreneurs International Kochi Chapter.

Rajat Sood is a Vice President at General Atlantic, a global growth equity firm, where he focuses on investments in the Financial Services sector. He joined General Atlantic in 2007, and currently works in the firm's New York office. Before moving to New York in 2009, Rajat worked at General Atlantic's Mumbai office for two years, where he was responsible for opportunities in the financial services, telecom and media sectors. Prior to GA, Rajat worked at McKinsey & Company Inc., a global management consulting firm, in their India office. While at McKinsey, he worked with clients in the financial services, retail and health insurance sectors on a range of strategic and operational issues. Rajat is a gold medalist from Indian Institute of Management, Calcutta where he did his MBA after graduating from Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi.

Rajesh Jain is Founder-Chairman and Managing Director of Netcore Solutions. Netcore is India’s leading provider of digital real-time communications and marketing solutions for enterprises via email and mobile (SMS). These solutions, centred around the digital identity (email address / mobile number) of an individual, help companies manage their customer relationships and acquire new customers. Netcore also provides email infrastructure solutions to enterprises. In addition, Netcore owns a majority stake in India’s largest local languages Internet portals, OneIndia.in (Greynium Information Technologies). Rajesh did his B. Tech (Electrical Engineering) from the Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai, followed by M.S. in Electrical Engineering from Columbia University, New York, U.S.A. He worked as Member of Technical Staff at NYNEX, USA, for 2 years before returning to India in 1992 to pursue his entrepreneurial dreams. One of Rajesh’s early ventures, IndiaWorld Communications, launched in 1995 was acquired by Satyam Infoway in November 1999 for US$ 115 million in one of Asia's largest Internet deals. IndiaWorld was the largest collection of India-centric websites, comprising Samachar (news), Khel (cricket), Khoj (search) and Bawarchi (food). Rajesh Jain is also Founder–Chairman of Emergic Venture Capital. Emergic has invested over $20 million of Rajesh’s personal money into a dozen companies in the digital space in India and abroad. Among the investments are Novatium, which has created a $100 network computer, Rajshri Media, which runs India’s largest broadband portal, and mChek, which is into mobile payments. Rajesh is a well-known figure in the Technology industry and is an invited speaker at national and international forums. He has also been featured in cover stories in both TIME and Newsweek. Mitul Desai is Senior Advisor for Strategic Partnerships in the U.S. Department of State's South & Central Asian Bureau. In this capacity, he engages private sector, NGO, and diaspora organizations to build partnerships around a variety of issues impacting the region, including entrepreneurship, philanthropy, trade & technology. Mitul comes to government from the corporate arena, where he worked as an investment bank analyst, entrepreneur, and intellectual property attorney. Before joining the State Department, he was an entrepreneur in the international life sciences sector, and an equity research analyst at Piper Jaffray & Co., where he analyzed publicly traded companies for institutional investor clients. He began his career by practicing law as an associate at the New York offices of global law firms, and as a senior attorney at Merck & Co. He received his B.A. in chemistry and philosophy from Rutgers University, and his J.D. from the Boston University School of Law. From 2006-2011, Mitul was a term member of the Council on Foreign Relations.

Dr. Preker is Head of the Health Industry Group and Health Investment Policy Analysis for the Investment Climate Department of the World Bank Group. He leads a team of advisors and analysts that work with policy makers, investors and health businesses in improving the market environment for private sector participation in the health sector in developing countries. Dr. Preker has worked at the World Bank, International Finance Corporation (IFC) and World Health Organization (WHO). Previously, as Chief Economist for the health sector, he coordinated the technical team that prepared the World Bank’s Health, Nutrition and Population Sector Strategy in 1997. He has written many scientific articles and is the author of over 15 books.

Currently, Brian serves as a Chief Operating Officer at PharmaStrat, a leading strategy consulting firm serving the biopharmaceutical and medical device industries. PharmaStrat is a member of the Decision Resources Group. In his current role Brian has assisted many of the world’s leading pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies to find ways to make medicines more affordable and accessible for people around the world. In addition, Brian serves in a leadership capacity for the Decision Resources Market Access Practice. Brian is a 2002 graduate of Moravian College, where he graduated Magna Cum Laude in both Political Science and Economics, while receiving Honors distinction from his work on Competitive Advantage in the Pharmaceutical Industry. Kuldip Chawlla

Mr. Chawlla joined Red Fort in 2007 and has expertise in risk mitigation and portfolio management strategies. From 2004 to 2006, Mr. Chawlla was the Chief Operating Officer at Unitech Realty Investors, where he played a key role in raising and managing a $250 million domestic real estate fund with investments in real estate projects worth over $1 billion. From 2003 to 2004, he was the Chief Operating Officer at VLCC Healthcare Ltd., India's leading weight loss and beauty services group, where he raised private equity from CLSA and led the firm's retail expansion across 25 cities on a pan-India basis. From 1996 to 2002, Mr. Chawlla was a Principal at IL&FS Investment Managers Limited, the private equity investment management business of the IL&FS Group. At IL&FS, as part of the founding team, he played a key role in managing over $150 million of institutional capital devoted to investing in infrastructure and high-growth sectors, including $100 million in an infrastructure-focused fund with American International Group. From 1994 to 1996, Mr. Chawlla set up and ran the operations for one of India's first foreign institutional investors, Chescor Capital, and invested in the public markets. From 1991 to 1994, he was an Investment Manager at a joint venture of Australia and New Zealand Banking Group Limited and 3i Group PLC, investing in early stage businesses across high-growth sectors. He started his career at ICICI Bank in 1988 in project and corporate finance. Mr. Chawlla is a frequent speaker and commentator at conferences in India and overseas on infrastructure, real estate and private equity.
